This last weekend I headed down to Christchurch to meet up for a weekend with Matt. On Friday night we just picked up some beer and food and headed out to Matt’s house in some valley with a complicated name near Akaroa. Matt’s place is definitely out in the wops, it was 40 minutes outside of Christchurch and about 20 minutes outside cell phone coverage. It was nice to have some peace and quiet, and the sheep weren’t being rowdy this weekend according to Matt.

On Saturday he and I headed into town to hang out. First we went to Starbucks in Cathedral Square again and sat around drinking our coffee. An extremely intoxicated gentleman fell over in the square while we were there and cut his head open providing a little bit of entertainment for Matt. After coffee we went to a local arcade to play “Big Game Hunter”, a very fun game of shooting wild animals that isn’t available in Wellington. Around 3:30 pm we headed to the sports bar The Holy Grail. The sports bar is in an old movie theatre changed into a split level bar that was pretty cool with cheap beers (pitchers for $7.50). We ate dinner with Katie, a fellow Canadian we know from the first days in the country in Auckland while we watched the Junior All Blacks dominate Australia A. After the game was the pre-game show of the All Blacks v Canada which the gaming odds were that the All Blacks would win by more than 70.

Canada played well in the first half, and would have finished the first half down 19 – 13 except for a last second try by the All Blacks marking the half way point at 26 – 13. Canada scored one try in the game during the first half on an interception about 10 metres out of their own goal line. As soon as the interception happened Matt stood up and started cheering, but it took so long for the player to run the length of the field that he had to sit down and then stand up and cheer when the player finally scored the try. In the second half though Canada’s fitness really came into effect with the All Blacks just overpowering the Canadians. The All Blacks scored 38 unanswered points in the second half while Canada only had a handful of chances scoring on the New Zealand side. Often when Canada did have the ball they had poor support with forwards trying to bust through the All Blacks on their own without support and the Kiwis easily stole possession.

Sunday was a nice relaxing recovery from the 11 hour drinking marathon the night before. We again went for coffee on Cathedral Square and watched Oceans 13 at the local cinema. We finished the day off with a dinner at Denny’s because it was convenient before Matt drove me to the airport and I headed home.
