Yesterday was another public holiday in New Zealand, Waitangi day. The problem with public holidays in New Zealand is that if an employee works on a public holiday they are entitled to time and a half and a day in lieu. Speaking to several part time university students, most want to work but few will because it is too costly to the owners. Restaurants and cafes that open on the day will have a 15% surcharge but retail stores aren’t allowed to charge extra. It is unfortunate that a lot of full time workers who get the day off will find that there is little to do in town because a) it’s more expensive and b) few places are open.
