Today was the release for Grand Theft Auto IV and once again New Zealand was lumped in with Australia (which is not a good thing). Australia doesn’t have an 18+ rating for video games, therefore the only games you can buy there are ones that are 15+. Well in some cases it doesn’t matter because the more violent games are still sold in New Zealand which has a proper 18+ rating. Today I found out that even though New Zealand should have been able to accept the US/UK unedited version of the game, Rockstar shipped the same gimped version to both Australia and New Zealand. A representative from Rockstar said that “the content was toned down in a few places but should not effect the overall game experience.” I don’t care if it doesn’t effect my overall game experience, the fact is that you’ve sent us the toned down version of the game when New Zealand censors would have allowed the full version. I don’t know which is worse, Rockstar not giving a damn about New Zealand consumers or Australia continuing to support a grossly outdated policy.
