Yesterday I tried to get tickets to the Wellington Sevens. Last year they sold out in about 20 minutes so I knew I had to get in there right when they went on sale. Well I logged on to ticketmaster.co.nz before 9 AM to make sure that I was ready to go right when tickets were on sale. When 9 AM rolled around I dived straight into trying to get 5 tickets. After a few unsuccessful attempts to find tickets I dropped down to trying to get 1 ticket so I could at least get there. No matter what I tried (including 1 ticket at any price) I could not seem to find a ticket. After about 20 frustrating minutes of submitting a search and hitting the back button I gave up.
Later in the day I learned that it appears to have been quite common. Of the 34,000 tickets available for the event only 8,000 were made available to the general public. The other 26,000 were distributed between season ticket holders, accommodation partners and charities. I think I made the mistake of trying to use the internet when clearly they didn’t release many of the 8,000 to. Some people apparently had zero trouble getting tickets, they just called up at 9 AM or went online and their request went straight through. If that’s true then why did I have so much trouble trying to get just 1 ticket?
To me, some part of their selling system is broken. They (Ticket Master) should publish how they are selling their tickets for major events so people like me, who had the ticket sale date booked in their calendar for months, don’t waste time on a stupid website that is supposed to make buying tickets easier but in fact only makes it worse. Now all I can do is wait and hope to get lucky that I can get a last minute ticket, which will be hard since the friend who had the hook up last time will be in South America.
