On Saturday, Georgia and I were invited to come with our friend Sally and her two-year-old son Max to the Wellington Zoo. We managed to drag ourselves out of bed and down into town to catch the bus out to Newtown. It was a routine Wellington day with strong gusts of wind coming from all angles and rain in the forecast. I quickly realized it was going to be colder than I thought, but it was too late to do anything about it. The number 23 bus was late (no real surprise) but we made it there in good time and weren’t the last ones there.
We arrived at the Zoo and Sally and Max were already there. Max is cute, and affectionately (accurately?) nicknamed Monster. What an energetic little boy: when I first met him he was chasing another kid around the cafe while chewing plastic squares from the floor of the play area. A few moments later Jen arrived, and shortly after that we started. A little way in we were joined by Sally’s friend Dave and his 10-year-old daughter Bailey.
Now that everyone was there we headed fully into the park. The weather seemed to hold out for us and many of the animals were out. There was one beautiful brown kiwi running back and forth in its enclosure — they are usually extremely shy. Monkey Island was good as always. The giraffes were getting up close and personal, and the meerkat sentries were on watch. The red pandas were amazing. There were three of them running around, climbing trees and frolicking. By then it was starting to get close to lunch time, so we said our goodbyes and headed home. Shortly after we arrived the rain came down.
