Today I jailbroke my iPhone, and I think everyone should do the same. I don’t necessarily agree with all of the reasons out there on why you should do it, but there are too many features that Apple should have implemented in the first place to go back. Some of the most useful downloads I’ve picked up so far:

Winterboard – lets you apply themes to your phone. I’m surprised Apple didn’t provide this functionality, especially since they could put it on the iTunes Store and gouge more money out of users (as they do with ringtones).

Categories – put apps into folders to save real estate on the screen. I imagine most other users are like me and have a bunch of games and a bunch of utilities that sit around hardly getting used and cluttering up the app list. With Categories, just stick them into appropriately named folders for better organization.

QuickGold – like QuickSilver for Macs. QuickGold turns your home button into a search function for everything on your iPhone and even keeps a history of your last opened applications, and when used along with Categories gives your iPhone a nice cleanly organized interface, but also the ability to launch any app with a few key strokes.

SBSettings – this app gives you far more preferences on your phone and is more advanced than BossPrefs. The best part is the ability to hide icons so you can finally get rid of that stupid Stocks application and the useless weather application that is never correct, which Apple wouldn’t let you remove because it is “standard”. The second best part about it is the ability to quickly disable individual broadcasting parts of the phone (like receiving calls but not wifi, for example).

These are just a few of the things that Apple could have done to make the iPhone even better out of the box. Maybe in future updates from Apple these types of features will make it into the iPhone and there will be less need to jailbreak it (I intentionally avoided the tethering topic for now). One app I’ve still to explore is how to get streaming radio to work, because being able to listen to the Canucks games on the go would be amazing!
