Today I did a demo of a simple Steganography program to the members of my team. Steganography is about hiding messages in plain sight so they go undetected. The message is in a carrier and that can be anything such as a pictures, video, audio, speech or letters. The program I demoed today encoded a message into an image by changing the colour information of the image.

An image in the simplest form is just a series of pixels of different colours. A pixel’s colour is made up of 3 parts, red, green and blue. By changing the least significant pieces of information about each colour I encoded a character into the pixel with minimal impact to the colour you see.

I showed off my nifty little app and hid some funny things into a picture of the Canucks logo. I did feel a desire to learn more about the subject from an IT perspective. I know there are at more advanced and clever ideas out there that might be worth a bit of a read.
