Today I finally started to upgrade my partner’s laptop. It is an old Acer TravelMate 2300 series POS and she was running Windows XP with Norton Antivirus and Office 2007. It was slow as. The first thing I did was have them add a 1GB DDR chip to give it five times the memory. I noticed an instant improvement going from 256MB to 1.25GB.

Next, and here is where it goes downhill, I tried to run the Acer eRecovery program to revert her laptop to the factory condition. I followed the instructions on the screen and on the web but now I’m pretty sure the program keeps freezing when the copy files portion gets to 100%. I’ve tried four times now and every time I get the same result. I’m going to leave it overnight and hopefully it will sort itself out.

These things happen when clever people think they are more clever than they actually are.
