I still haven’t had any luck with my partner’s laptop. I’ve tried to install Ubuntu 8.10 to test the hard drive but it turns out the disk was corrupt. Today I’m going to get some Linux live boot CDs to troubleshoot the hard drive but I’m not too optimistic at this point.
I’m going to start pushing on people who ask my computer advice to buy their computers from an OEM and make sure they own a full copy of Windows. These recovery systems that they build into the system are garbage, if I had a full copy of windows this reformat would already be done (provided there are no problems with the disk).
I’m now in talks with Acer Support to figure out why their recovery software doesn’t work. I know the laptop is old but the recovery CD for that laptop should work!
