Last weekend we made an impromptu mission out to Red Rocks in Wellington. Red Rocks is where the male seals have their haul-out in preparation for the mating season (or at least that’s what the signs said). We caught the bus out to Island Bay and started our mission.
So we got off the bus at the end of the line and walked along the water front in Island Bay. It was a really great day; we were both overdressed from really early on and had to shed a few layers. When we got to the off-road part of the trail we found that they closed the trail to vehicles on Sundays. This meant we didn’t have to worry about getting run over, but it also meant we couldn’t hitch a ride the four or so kilometres to the rocks.
So after much walking we got to Red Rocks. The area gets its name because of the distinct red colouring of the rocks, but don’t ask me why they’re red. The area of rocks was a lot smaller than I expected, but that was only part of the reason for the trip. A short distance away we found a few seals sunning themselves on the rocks. Lazy buggers. A few got up and stretched while we were there but most of them didn’t really do anything. They sure smelt bad though.
We made our way back to Island Bay and decided to stop for a bite to eat. We walked past a cafe on the way out called The Bach that we were going to go back to. Unfortunately we forgot where it was and thought we had walked past it without noticing. A bit of disappointment kicked in with the thought that we’d have to go all the way back to Wellington to get something to eat but as we rounded one of the last corners to get the bus, there it was. It turns out we were just dumb (I blame the heat). After some delicious, well-deserved milkshakes we headed back home.
