At the work Christmas party last year I won a free rental car for 48 hours. It was kind of
ironic because the year before they had awesome techy prizes to be won, so when they announced that the big prize was a rental car I slagged it a bit…then won it. I finally got my New Zealand licence just recently, so we booked a car for the weekend to go to Napier. Early Saturday morning I picked up the rental car (a Ford Mondeo) and we set off heading up the North Island.

We drove over the Rimutakas and into the Wairarapa Valley. We drove through Greytown, then Carterton and finally Masterton, each town getting bigger and a little less interesting. We got to Napier early in the afternoon and set out walking down the street on a beautiful sunny day. We went to the aquarium and watched a diver feed the sharks. He had stingrays crawling all over his face. I wonder what that feels like…

We spent the rest of the day wandering through Napier’s streets. We went for a drive to see the various places, got lost for a bit, then drove in circles for a bit. We had dinner at a great place on the waterfront that was competing in the local food competition. After a few cocktails in time we headed back to our room. The next day being a Sunday, not much was open, so we just did a little bit of shopping for some treasures before driving back to Wellington via Palmerston North and the Kapiti Coast.
