We drove all the way up to Cape Reinga today. Cape Reinga is very important in Maori mythology. When a Maori dies, his or her spirit travels to Cape Reinga to depart to Hawaiki, the Maori ancestral home. At the cape there is a single pohutukawa tree clinging to the side of the cliff; its roots are said to dig all the way to the underworld and it has never flowered. At the lighthouse there is a signpost with distances to other places – Vancouver is 11222 km from Cape Reinga.
