It’s funny to me how the different news sites rank Olympic countries to make their country look better. For example, in New Zealand stuff.co.nz ranks them by gold medals. This means New Zealand’s few gold medals rank them fairly high. However CTV.ca in Canada ranks them by total medals, making Canada’s many silver and bronzes rank Canada fairly high.

Both systems are flawed in opposite ways. Stuff’s ranking a country with 1 gold higher than a country with 1000 silvers, while CTV ranks a country with 15 bronzes higher than a country with 14 golds.

The IOC has not come out in favor for any of the numerous ranking systems that have been developed. Until the support an official ranking system, I’ll continue to enjoy each country’s propaganda on how great their olympic achievements are.

While writing this I found CBC.ca’s take on this: http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2012/08/09/f-efficient-olympics.html
